Born in Guatemala City on 19 August 1978, Luis grew up in an upper-crust family. His parents were physicians. He is of German Guatemalan descent. He went to a private English language school in Guatemala City. At the age of 18, for deriving a BS in mathematics, he started for Duke University.
In 2005 he obtained his PHD in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University. Later that year, he became a faculty member at the Carnegie Mellon University as a consulting professor in the Computer Science Department.
