Tim O'Brien is an American novelist, short story writer, and journalist. He is best known for his Vietnam War novel The Things They Carried (1990). He has written several other novels and short story collections, including Going After Cacciato (1978), which won the National Book Award for Fiction. O'Brien was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, on March 16, 1954. He attended Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he earned a B.A. in political science in 1976. He then attended Harvard University, where he earned an M.A. in government in 1978. O'Brien's first novel, If I Die in a Combat Zone, Box Me Up and Ship Me Home, was published in 1973. His other works include Going After Cacciato (1978), The Nuclear Age (1985), The Things They Carried (1990), In the Lake of the Woods (1994), Tomcat in Love (1998), July, July (2002), and The Night in Question (1996). O'Brien has received numerous awards for his writing, including the National Book Award for Fiction, the Pritzker Military Library Literature Award, and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize.
